During Phase I of the project, "Living Well with Asthma" was developed. This multimedia pilot program was targeted for one of the groups most impacted by asthma -- adult African American women. Content for the program was influenced by focus groups with African American women; an online questionnaire with asthma medical professionals; input from project consultants, professionals in the field of asthma research and clinical practice; and information from the clinical practice guidelines for asthma treatment and management.
"Living Well with Asthma" utilizes a motivational interview (2002, Miller & Rollnick) approach to assist users in improving their asthma management. By responding to questions posed on the computer screen and tailored to the user's response, the user is encouraged to improve her asthma self-management behaviors by complying with prescribed medication protocols and triggers prevention and mitigation recommendations. Adjunct text materials provide information on implementing an Asthma Action plan, an Asthma Diary; basic knowledge about medications usage and triggers prevention; and tips for communicating with health care providers. The self-management intervention was tested for efficacy with 60 African American women who have been diagnosed with asthma by their health care provider.
