Whether the emphasis is on personal life issues such as diet,
smoking,
caregiving,
or exercise
or on actual on-the-job
training, ORCAS harnesses easily accessed technology to bring scientifically
validated, video-rich content to the work site.
We have chosen to focus on work site–based programs because we
recognize that forward-thinking employers understand the health of their employees
affects the bottom line. Unhealthy habits such as smoking or lack of exercise
lead to more-costly health insurance premiums and greater absenteeism. Family
challenges such as parenting problems or eldercare can distract employees from
concentrating on their performance at work. Proactive employers recognize that
they can control these expenses with cost-effective employee health initiatives
and worklife balance programs.
Each program at ORCAS is developed by a research
scientist and his/her team on the basis of the latest research in a
given field. Nationally-recognized consultants join with experienced instructional
designers and technicians to create practical interventions that can be easily
delivered at the work site. Each program is tested scientifically — most often
in a randomized controlled trial — to document outcomes and the program's ability
to enhance the lives of the people who use it.
